![]() Topic: Breva 750 - do many come up for sale?Posted: 07 Aug 2012 at 11:06 |
|
Having spotted a Breva at the weekend and instantly fallen in love with it, I'm wondering if anyone can give me some advice on (a) if it would be a good first big bike (restricted to 33bhp), and (b) if many of them come up for sale, as I can't see that there are any near me at the moment - I live in Bedfordshire. I have spotted one in Peterborough that has just been sold, but I'm considering taking the afternoon off (it's about an hour and a quarter from here) just to ride over and try it out for size, I'm that keen!
I started learning in July 2011, got a Suzuki Marauder 125, got my full (restricted) licence in November 2011 and have been riding a Kawasaki Ninja 250 since then. Really I would like something less sporty than the Ninja, with a little more relaxed riding position - it's more designed for youthful lads, and I'm a rather less youthful woman whose dodgy wrist and neck joints are suffering! I would also like something my 5'5" can cope with without any bother, I'm not the most confident rider or the strongest for manhandling bikes, but while I rather like the Nevada I would prefer not to have another cruiser just yet, having done most of my learning on the Marauder I found steering it far more hassle than on the school learner bikes or the Ninja. The Breva looks like it could be the perfect bike for me (possibly with the addition of the lower seat?), and one I imagine I would want to keep long after my licence restriction runs out. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks. |

Welcome, the 750 is an easy bike to ride and live with quick enough to keep up on the smaller roads and easy enough to cruise on a motorway, light and at 5ft5" you should be ok even without the lowered seat.
They are an ideal first large bike, big enough but not too big.
There are an awful lot of folk who have traded a bigger Guzzi for one of the 750 range much to their delight. Guzzis are known for being able to cover large mileage without detrement, so it could be something you will keep for many years of riding pleasure

Where in Bedfordshire?
The Oxford branch meet this Sunday(12th) at 14:00 at the Red Lion Wendlebury, just off J9 of the M40.
My lil'Breva should be there and one other may be as well.
I am not offering a stranger a ride but you are more than welcome to try it for size and ask questions.
They do come up occasionally but usually sell quickly.
pm me and I can send my phone number if required.

Hi - sorry, replied to the previous post before seeing this one come in. I'm in Ampthill, so quite a way from Wendlebury but I'm tempted. It looks like the Herts & Beds Branch should be meeting this evening as well, closer to home but I don't know if any Brevas will be in attendance of course.
I may well pm nearer the time, thank you! |

I have a 33bhp restrictor kit for any 750 ie pre 2009 and a non bike specific certificate. The Mrs used it on her Nevada.

Oh yeah, due to the nature of the 750 ie engines, unless you really press on, you won't notice it is restricted.
I have just bought a Breva 750 myself. Looking forward to get to know it better.

Thanks for the info Kevin. How is it restricted, is it the set of washers thing I've seen or something different? I'm hoping it's something reasonably straightforward, and that I don' t have to go for the £250 from a dealer option!

Whatever way you do it to make it road legal as far as I know you need a certificate stating it has been restricted it needs that for insurance too. as far as I am aware so it may be a dealer thing....
A while ago when I was instructing many yrs ago the Eastern Euro bikes ...Simpson/MZ/CZ restrictors" were a lead fishing weight attached to the throttle cable, needless to say the 50cc Simpsons were very sought after as they could be made to do 50 mph with ease when the more sophisticated Jap 50's certainly did no more than 35 down hill with a following wind... It is basically a throttle stop that bolts to the underside of the throttle body. Genuine Guzzi component bought from Moto Strada. I will see if I can look it out. But it really is not a hassle.

After a visit to the Herts & Beds meet the other night I'm considering Nevada 750s as well - not that many of those are for sale within 200 miles of me either. I didn't get to see one of those but spoke to an owner, but I'm wondering how differently they perform. Looking at the specs (including torque and wheel/tyre sizes) they should be pretty much the same, but Motorcycle News has the Breva doing a quarter mile in 12.5 seconds and the Nevada doing it in 16.1 seconds, which is massively different. Of course they also say the seat height is 725mm, which is blatantly wrong, and say my Ninja 250 does 170 miles to the tank when I get 200 miles without behaving terribly well, so I don't take their figures as gospel.
Any views from people who know the two bikes would be greatly appreciated - I very much doubt I will be able to compare both bikes together at a dealer to make a choice, so I expect I'll end up going on gut feelings and advice. |

The biggest difference may not be on paper at all... the riding position. For me with short 29" legs, surprisingly, the cruisy lower Nevada was more cramped to ride. Cabernet rides both, so he should know the real world answer....
It might be worth putting your measurements into the motorbike ergonomics site to compare positions. http://cycle-ergo.com/ Edited by EasyTiger - 09 Aug 2012 at 21:51 |

Speed isn't what they're about. Big grins are.
There should be both at Wendlebury on Sunday.
Both are fine machines which will tour and rally easily.

Thanks EasyTiger, that website is really useful, it's been a great help in seeing what the real differences are in riding position between various bikes. Either the Breva or the Nevada will make a massive difference to the aches and pains my poor old body has on the Ninja, and I've totally discounted the other (easier to find!) options I'd wondered about before spotting the beautiful Breva last week.
Ian, I'm definitely up for the big grins and not interested in speed other than for being quick at lights and safe to overtake - I was just interested in the massive difference in the figures and whether there was any truth in them. And doing whatever comparisons I could to try and make a decision of course! I would love to come along to Wendlebury on Sunday afternoon and ogle the bikes, and talk to owners about them. |

Indeed, I have been borrowing the Mrs 07 Nevada ie when I needed luggage capacity and have now got myself a 56 Breva 750.
Have not had the Breva Long enough to comment on MPG but the figures I was returning on the Nevada are comparable to thos Ian Dunmore quotes as getting on his Breva.I have had neither flat out but they seem to have comparable cruising speeds of around 90mph and seen them both just into 3 fiqures.
I am 5'9" and 14st
The Nevada seat height is shorter and the foot rests are more forward set. Neither I found intrusive on a 1000 mile tour of Scotland. The handle bars are further back and much wider. The Breva's bars are the narrowest I have ridden with that I can remember making filtering easy. I found the Nevada's bars gave me back ache, which I could of remedied with replacements easily, but it is the Mrs bike and needs to fit her at 5'2".
The Nevada runs a smaller rear wheel, but a deeper profile tyre so gearing is equal. The Breva runs alloy wheels and a plastic tank, so neither will rust. The Nevada's tank is metal, the wheels are chromes steel and spoked.
I would say the Nevada is heavier so perhaps not so quick on the 1/4 mile das, but I would not think the different would be noticeable in the real world.
You have mentioned your Ninja 250. I would have thought a Nevada would be a big leap in posture.

I have a long body and short legs. 28. To get on the speed triple I have to put the side stand down fortuantly it will hold my weight get on it like a horse. The Bellagio has a lower seat height but I can only just touch the ground on it because of the seat width. It is the seat width that causes problems!

Spot on about seat width. I couldn't reach the ground from my 840mm-high Versys, but I can on an 830mm Honda NC700X, just as easily as on the NC700S, which is 790mm. The Honda seats have a narrower front section, which is chamfered, allowing legs to be close together, not splayed out. Some optional "lower" seats are merely scooped out and don't offer any improvement.
This is why Guzzibear's Annie's Virago is so good, being wasp-waisted... |

Been out for a spirited ride over to Squires and back today. 173 miles of predominantly "B" road and low "A" bashing. Used 14 litres which I calculate to be just over 56MPG. Ian D reckons he got 62 recently which I can see if I was a bit less spirited. Going to Southport and back the other night I got around 54mpg, but again, that was spirited ridingThat 173 miles was on one tank fuel, the last 25 being with the low fuel light on.
A gutsey little bike that can maintain a spritley pace, but can get out of shape when pushed really hard through the twisties. On certain roads it feels quicker than my V11 and is certainly a pheck sight cheaper on gas

Thank you Ian and everyone else who was so friendly and helpful at the Oxford meet today. Lovely ride out for a sunny Sunday afternoon as well. My mind is now made up, it has to be a Breva - now for the tricky bit of finding one anywhere near me!

Well, I had a first quick ride this evening on my lovely Breva (thank you Mike), fitted with the restrictor (thank you Cabernet) - fantastic. Such a different ride from what I've got used to, which is an excellent excuse to do lots of practising!

Well done Jackie, another satisfied customer! Some of the Essex branch are coming up to the Herts and Beds meeting in the evening on Tuesday 4th September maybe see you there?
The next thing you need for your Breva is club membership, worth every penny, but we aren't supposed to push it on here!
